Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers worried it could be an algal bloom.
The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a section of a coastal area about 60km south of the city. A like substance has also been noted on sections of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens have been collected and submitted to the regulatory body for examination. A official commented that "algal blooms are a natural event in response to changes in food sources, warmth, rain or sunlight".
"The events are occasionally called red or pink tides because the proliferations can color the water crimson," the representative noted. "Only some algal blooms are toxic, with several kinds acting as a key source of energy for marine life in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their frequency has grown in the past few years, partially due to climate change and contamination that join together to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that usually function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their colonies that disturbs the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These events have been compared to marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as conditions are ripe. In more extreme scenarios, sensitive marine ecosystems can be destroyed as sea creatures is destroyed or deprived of oxygen, providing more nutrients for the proliferation.
A southern state in the past grappled with a devastating algal bloom along its coastal region after a succession of sea temperature spikes, which extended across a vast area. The bloom caused surfers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across hundreds of species, according to agency assessments.
An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the onset of that outbreak commented, based on pictures of the Tasmanian outbreak, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There are lots of these outbreaks around the island of late," she added.
The scientist explained this organism did not generate poisons comparable to the organism involved in that severe event, but it does eat tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"You usually see a bloom of sea sparkle after a proliferation of something else, or an event such as a marine breeding," she noted.
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it looked like the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and suggested the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, citing like situations elsewhere.
"So the state needs to deliver a strong warning here, the officials and the regulators need to act to this. We need to examine the specimens we've taken and we need to inform the public here," she emphasized.
The scientist said she had concerns for public safety after noticing a numbness along her limbs and skin while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.
An environmental foundation has stated lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist describing the event as an "ecological crisis" and urging the local leader to see and "assume command the response that government must be undertaking".
"He needs to understand this is a catastrophe in the making, economically as well as ecologically."
Addressing the media, the leader said he was uninformed of any links between the algae outbreak and the aquaculture sector, stating expert examination was necessary before judgments could be reached.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are environmentally safe and sustainable," he added.
"Numerous shorelines across the island are our treasures and we need to ensure the community and our business sector can live together to use our seas productively and in a lasting way."
