The Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Number One Place.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to a challenging academic quiz than a new popular music project from an artist who just had a last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided into four distinct sections and sung in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album investigating female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often by way of the prism of different female saints. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is shot heavenward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive list of contributors. The pure daring by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars look quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, and complete praise going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to blend the past with modern styles, the scale are far greater here, with the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. When she is tearing hearts in two, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly on a stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated string surge crashes in with comedic impact. The track immediately segues into the frenetic track featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album is that the listener rarely exactly understand—nor want to predict—what it is going to next."

Almost every track concludes at a completely distinct place from how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her earlier rhythmic work begins out dark and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves navigating the line between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. That trick gets repeated on another expansive ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. This is a deep well of buried treasure that requires time to fully explore but never seem like hard work. While some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the guests around it, some intoxicated on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
