France will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following British demands

French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.

French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."

Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.

Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to disable the engines of the vessels.

This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.

This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Currently French officials will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.

Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
